چکیده
Successful face detection and facial feature extraction is crucial for for a variety of applications, including speech recognition and fatigue monitoring. Detecting and tracking faces in a moving automobile is challenging because of a variety of reasons. Among these reasons are changing poses, extreme lighting changes and shadowing. In this paper, we investigate two approaches for shadow compensation in such images. Together, these techniques o er a good improvement in the face detection accuracy on a data set captured in a moving automobile.

Illumination effects in face recognition
How do observers recognize faces despite dramatic image variations that arise from changes in illumination? This paper examines 1) whether face recognition is sensitive to illumination direction, and 2) whether cast shadows improve performance by providing information about illumination, or hinder performance by introducing spurious edges. In Experiment 1, observers judged whether 2 sequentiall...

Today, with the advancement of technology, the use of tools for extracting information from video are much wider in terms of both visual power and the processing power. High-speed car, perfect detection accuracy, business diversity in the fields of medical, home appliances, smart cars, humanoid robots, military systems and the commercialization makes these systems cost effective. Among the most...
متن کاملRoad Detection via On-line Label Transfer
Vision–based road detection is an essential functionality for supporting advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) such as road following and vehicle and pedestrian detection. The major challenges of road detection are dealing with shadows and lighting variations and the presence of other objects in the scene. Current road detection algorithms characterize road areas at pixel level and group pi...
متن کاملShadow detection for vehicles by locating the object-shadow boundary
We introduce in this paper a shadow detection method for vehicles in traffic video sequences. Our method approximates the boundary between vehicles and their associated shadows by one or more straight lines. These lines are located in the image by exploiting both local information (e.g. statistics in intensity differences) and global information (e.g. principal edge directions). The proposed me...
متن کاملMixture model for face-color modeling and segmentation
In this paper, we propose a general methodology for face-color modeling and segmentation. One of the major diculties in face detection and retrieval is partial face extraction due to highlights, shadows and lighting variations. We show that a mixture-of-Gaussians modeling of the color space, provides a robust representation that can accommodate large color variations, as well as highlights and...
